NIT Warangal, the first and the most diversified among the NITs has been among the top 10 institutes of our country. The Department of Mathematics was established in 1959 and has always shared the vision of the institute in striving for excellence in teaching and research activities. Over the years, the department hasevolved as one that provides excellent teaching and research in Applied Mathematical Sciences.The frontier areas of research of the department include: Fluid Mechanics, Bio-mechanics, Mathematical Modeling, Numerical Analysis, Finite Element Method, CFD, Optimization Techniques, Coding Theory, etc.Our Department is recognized by AICTE as the only QIP centre for PhD programmes among all NITS.The department started its M.Sc. Applied Mathematics course in the year 1970 with the intake of students on the basis of NITWET, a national-level entrance test for NIT Warangal. In the context of changing needs of the software industry, the Department is also offering a Computer Oriented Mathematics course – M.Sc. (Mathematics and Scientific Computing). This course is offered from the year2001 onwards, with a judicious combination of essential Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer courses.

Over and above a rigorous academic schedule, a great emphasis is placed on all-round development of the students.

Curriculum:

The department keeps in pace with the advances in technology while framing the curriculum. The curriculum of M.Sc. Degree program in Applied Mathematics & Mathematics and Scientific Computing is on par with that of the best Institution in the country.Facilities in the department:v Department Library The department has its own library with a reasonably good collection of books on Mathematics Laboratories The laboratories in the department and the computer center are equipped with most modern facilities to provide the best work environment. The students are trained in computer programming languages like C, C++, and FORTRAN. They also gain exposure in handling problems through mathematical software like MATLAB, Mathematica etc.

Project Work:

Apart from the curriculum, a project work on an applied mathematics field is mandatory for completion of the degree in our M.Sc. Mathematics courses. Every student has to carry out an independent project in the final year second semester under the guidance of an expert faculty member in the concerned field.
