A Profile of Department of Humanities and Social Sciences
About the Department:
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences has been recently started , bifurcated in February 2009 from the erstwhile combined Department of Mathematics and Humanities. It was a department of English to begin with and the dimension of social sciences was added later.This young department is now two years old. It plays a unique role teaching very essential non-technical subjects to the students pursuing various professional courses in the institute. The main focus is on communication in scientific and business contexts..
The Department offers regular courses in English for Communication to the students of B.Tech and MBA program mes. A new Soft Skills elective was started this year for III B.Tech students. A course on English for Scientific Communication is offered to Ph.D scholars to guide them in technical communication in general and drafting their theses in particular..
Research has been conducted in English and Economics and so far eleven Ph. D degrees are awarded. One more is in active progress.
The Department is looking ahead to introduce foreign language courses and a range of social sciences subjects of use to engineering students.
